Advanced Lego Robotics or Linux System Adminstration
- During this week, there will actually be two camps running at the
same time. One camp will be a camp Lego Robotics camp, and the other
camp will be a Linux System Administration camp.
- The purpose of this
camp is
to give you a deeper, more intense introduction to the world of Lego
Robotics or the Linux Operating System.
- The Linux Camp will give you
a general knowledge of how to administer a Linux system. You will
receive an overview of many topics, including history, installation,
system adminstration, scripting, and security. Due to time constraints
we will not be able to examine all of these topics in considerable
detail. You will receive the latest version of Linux to take home with
you and to try out on your own.
- The Lego camp will expand on
the fundamentals of Robot building and programming using Lego
Mindstorms kit. You will learn some history and applications, but the
goal is to build your own robot capable of performing such tasks as
maze walking, hunt and destroy, light finding, or security patrol.
Mindstorm robots are programmable in an intuitive visual language. If
you choose to keep the Lego kit, you will be charged and additional
$200.
- The evenings will be
reserved for more work and network gaming! Yeah!
- This camp is for
students
entering grades 9 - 12.
- In order to be
eligible for
this camp, you must have attended one of our previous camps, or taken
some programming classes at you high school. If you have not done
either of these, then this could be an awfully tough camp for you, and
you might want to think about looking into the Introduction to
Computer Programming camp.
- This camp shall be limited
to only 35 campers! Make sure you get
in
your application by May 1st. Applicants will be notified if they are
accepted to camp by May 15th. If you are not selected for the camp,
then your deposit will be refunded in its entirety.
- Please read the brochure for
any further application requirements.
Introduction
to
Computer Programming
Programming
and Robotics Camp
- This is a brand, new day
camp!!
-
During
this week, there will
actually be two camps running at the
same time. One camp will be a camp Lego Robotics camp, and the other
camp will be a programming camp. You will not be able
to attend both camps. While there will be social interactions between
the two groups, the course work will be completely different.
- The robots of choice will be
the Lego Mindstorm Kits. The
Mindstorms camp will introduce students to the fundamentals of robot
building and programming. Along the way, some history and current
applications will also be introduced. But, the goal of the week is to
build your own robot capable of performing some task. Maze-following,
hunt-and-destroy, find
the light, and security patrol are some possibilities. Mindstorms
robots are programmable in an intuitive
visual language. No experience is necessary, but
students should be motivated about the field of robotics.
-
If
you choose to keep your robot
from the Lego camp, there will be a $200 extra charge. If you do not
wish to take the robot with you, there will be no charge. We will need
to know your choice at least one month prior to the camp so we can make
sure we order enough of the robots for you to take home.

|
- The programming aspect of
the camp will introduce the campers to their choice of programming
language. They will have the choice of learning to program in BASIC or
C++. There will be current Transylvania faculty and students to assist
the student's learning. This will be a learn at your own pace style of
program, allowing more one on one interaction with the campers and
instructors.
- This camp shall be limited
to only 35 campers! Make sure you get
in
your application by May 1st. Applicants will be notified if they are
accepted to camp by May 15th. If you are not selected for the camp,
then your deposit will be refunded in its entirety.
- Please read the brochure for
any further application requirements.
Academic
Camp
-
This
is a pure academic camp. In
other words, unlike our other camps there will be no computer
instruction this week.
-
This
camp is structed to have two
academic sessions- one in the morning and one in the afternoon. So, you
might have a morning session in Economics and an afternoon session in
Religion. These lectures are given by the faculty and staff on
Transylvania. This is intended to give you a taste of college
life. The lectures that you hear will be basically the same ones you
might receive in a Transylvania class.
-
You will also be given
a
class during the evenings on ACT/SAT preparation. You will have two
nights of Math preparation and two nights of verbal preparation.
Classes like this could cost almost as much as our camp alone! Many of
our previous campers have told us that it has been especially useful
for them!
- We
will have a few talks in the
evening from people with ties to the Appalachian region. These talks
are inteded to challenge you to exceed any goals that you might have
for yourself.
-
This
camp shall be limited to
only 25 campers! Make sure you get in your application by May 1st.
Applicants will be notified if they are accepted to camp by May 15th.
If you are not selected for the camp, then your deposit will be
refunded in its entirety.
- This
camp has been endowed by the
Jessee Ball DuPont Foundation. This is what allows us to charge
only a nominal fee for registration purposes. As such, this camp is only
open to
students fom the Appalachian region.
- Please
read the brochure for any
further application requirements.
Housing
- The students will be staying
in the Poole dormitory, with two
campers per room (if possible).
- Each room has a phone, 2 beds, study desks,
bathroom, and a security system. The parents will be given a phone
number which rings directly into their son's or daughter's room. There
will be a community refrigerator, if needed.
- We
will activate the security system
each evening as we put our campers to bed. While we have never had any
problems, this is intended to make sure the campers stay is as safe as
possible.
- Campers
are allowed to let us know
if they have a roommate preference. We will do our best to accomodate
as many people as possible.
- During
the evening's recreation
time, the campers will have the opportunity to use many of Transy's
facilities. The campers will have access to a pool, tennis courts,
racquetball courts, pool table, ping-pong table, etc.. There will also
be a chance to check e-mail and surf the 'net in the evening.
