Chapter V: The 80's
Beta Mu, the Pride of Delta Sigma Phi
Previous | Next | History
Fall of 1980 was a do or die rush for Beta Mu. Although well prepared and full of excitement the prior year, rush had yielded only a small pledge class, and even fewer men continued on to initiation.
But 1980 was different. It was a year that turned the destiny of the chapter 360 degrees. A "fun" rush in which 100% of the chapter actively participated netted a pledge class which was nearly as large as the active chapter. But more importantly, it yielded a new breed of Delta Sigs - still diverse, yet excelling in all levels - leadership, academics, and athletics. It was with this "seed" pledge class that Beta Mu would grow into the largest fraternity at Transylvania with upwards of 70 members throughout much of the rest of the 80's.
And best of all was the fact that the brotherhood built in the late 70's remained strong as the chapter grew. Pride in traditions was renewed. The chapter worked hard and played hard. Whether it was on the athletic field, where the chapter often finished a strong second in the All Sports Points competition, or in the classroom, where the chapter always finished first (often with a cumulative chapter grade point average as high as 3.4) or on stage, where Beta Mu won an unprecedented seven straight Greek Sings, Delta Sigma Phi was the force to be reckoned with at TU.
Pride was probably never stronger than in the fall of 1986 when the largest pledge class in the history of the chapter, and probably of Transylvania, assembled on bid day - a pledge class 33 men strong.
The 80's were very good to Beta Mu, and to its individual members. Between 1980 and 1990, four brothers were elected Mr. Pioneer. Four brothers were selected Greek Man of the Year. The chapter was honored every year by the National Fraternity - nine of those years receiving top chapter recognition. And between 1980 and 1990, four brothers were selected by the National Fraternity as the Outstanding Undergraduate Member of Delta Sigma Phi in America.
