Chapter VI:

The 90's - What a Good Time to be a Delta Sig

Previous | Next | History

Now that over half the decade is gone, a trend in Beta Mu has definitely been established culminating in the pledge class garnered in this year. Beta Mu has been the epitome of all the ideals of Delta Sigma Phi throughout this last decade: leadership, scholarship, athleticism, and (possibly most importantly) excellence.

In 1991, Beta Mu won the All Sports Trophy (for the first time anyone can remember). Also Brother Chuck Simms was elected Mr. Pioneer by the University and National Outstanding Active by the fraternity. In 1993, Ephraim Woods was also selected Mr. Pioneer. Bother Chuck Simms and Clint Snedegar were chosen Greek Man of the Year for 1990 and 1991, respectively.

With the dawning of the new decade, Beta Mu brought in several new pledge classes with guys that are considered immortal Gods by many brothers today. Later, these same brothers would mature into some of the highest positions held by students here at the University and eventually the fraternity.

These were brothers that went to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, New York for pancakes, or Nashville for a Pink Floyd Concert, often on a whim. The brotherhood, perhaps never stronger in Beta Mu, continued to grow and mesh all the brothers into a strong network of friends.

In 1994, Eric Jones leading the way as Rush Chair brought in an incredible thirty men when many of the fraternity's detractors thought that the empetus was dwindling. However, these thirty men did not hurt the fraternity, as many feared, instead the increase in size for the fraternity strengthened the fraternal bond among the brothers. Again in 1995, another large pledge class was won bringing the chapter to 83 men and forging a tight, but large group of men.

But what about the caliber of men? In 1994, Lofty Durham was selected to head Omicron Delta Kappa, the leadership honorary, and Shane Rau was voted to be Student Body President. In 1995, Rich Mains was not only chosen to be the Marc Mathews Outstanding Active by the chapter, he was chosen as the Outstanding Undergraduate Member of Delta Sigma Phi by the national fraternity. Here at Transy, Rich Mains was also selected Greek Man of the Year in 1995. This year, T. Tommy Littlepage was also selected as the Greek Man of the Year.

All of this culminated in the active brother's most proud feat - a brother on the National Grand Council. In 1995, during the National Conference in Orlando, Florida; Kevin Brown, then president of the chapter, was selected as the undergraduate member of the National Grand Council.

If there was any doubt to the kind of man Beta Mu obtains in the 90's, all those doubts should have been driven away by now. However, the decade is not over and no doubt, there will be more awards and leadership positions awaiting the chapter here at Transy.
