Greek Vocabulary

 

Active – An initiated member.

Alumnus – Initiated members who are college graduates.

Bid – A formal invitation to join a chapter.

Brother/Sister – a term used by members in a chapter when referring to each other.

Chapter – The local collegiate group of a national fraternity or sorority

Formal Recruitment – A period of structured membership selection

Greek – A term applied to members affiliated with Greek-letter organizations

IFC (Interfraternity Council) – a representative government body of fraternities affiliated with the North-American Interfraternity Conference.

Initiation – The ceremony in which a new member learns the ritual and secrets associated with that organization.

Legacy – The daugheter, sister, granddaughter, son, brother or grandson of an initiated member.

National – A term referring to the central organization of a given fraternity of sorority.

New Member – A member of a sorority or fraternity who is not yet an initiated member.

NIC (North-American Interfraternity Conference) – a conference body composed of delegates from 67 recognized men’s social fraternities

NPC (National Panhellenic Conference) – a conference body composed of delegates from 26 recognized women’s social fraternities.

Panhellenic Association – a representative government body of sororities affiliated with the National Panhellenic Conference.

Pan-Hellenic – A governing body composed of nine historically African-American sororities and fraternities.

Philanthropy – Active effort to promote human welfare.

Potential New Member – An undergraduate man or woman who participates in the recruitment process.

Recruitment Staff/Rho Gamma – An unaffiliated male or female appointed to assist potential new members with recruitment.

Quota – The specified number of new members each sorority may accept.

Recommendation – A letter written to by an alumna/alumnus to their chapter recommending an particular man or woman for membership; also known as a reference.

Unaffiliated- A Greek man or woman whose responsibilities require them to keep their particular chapter membership undisclosed.
